Save Community Childcare - Support The Children's Center

Advocating for The Carl & Norma Miller Children's Center
On January 30, 2025, Frederick Community College President, Dr. Annesa Cheek, sent a message to all parents of The Carl & Norma Miller Children's Center announcing her decision to close the Center on May 16, 2025.
This unilateral decision blindsided the Children's Center's Director and staff, parents and the entire Frederick Community.
The Children's Center was originally planned to be closed for necessary renovations from May-August 2025, and now those efforts will be spent to repurpose the building to expand the already existing workforce training spaces for healthcare fields.
President Cheek is publicly justifying her decision based on these incomplete and inaccurate statements:
-
Childcare is not the primary focus of FCC's mission
-
The Children's Center is not financially self-sustaining
Solution-oriented conversations were not conducted and there has been an intentional misrepresentation of the program's operational structure and performance history. The FCC President and the Board of Trustees continue to refuse to engage in public conversations around this topic. They have been unwilling to explore proposals or discussions around ways to protect and preserve this generous gift given to the community by the Carl and Norma Miller family.
Our community is asking for and deserves answers!

We represent hundreds of community members who care about:
-
the affordable childcare crisis in Frederick County
-
the need for student and working parents to have access to
-
the ECE workforce and career training partnership program with the Center already in place at FCC that will be lost
-
the Miller family legacy and the needless closing a successful program without exploring alternative options first
-
the lack of transparency, communication and accountability around this decision; that the FCC President seems to be disregarding the community's concerns, and remains unwilling to engage in any public conversation about the matter
